England dented early on rain-hit day after securing scant lead

England were jolted early in the second dig after achieving a slender 7-run lead in the first innings on a rain-marred third day in Edgbaston. Inclement weather permitted only 69 balls after Lunch, in which the hosts lost their openers for only 28 runs.

Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett started on a promising note after Australia were confined to 386 in the morning session. However, an hour and a half of a rain-spell led to a disruption in their respective rhythm. With the ball hooping around corners, Duckett fell poking an away-angler from Pat Cummins. Cameron Green, at gully, took another splendid catch to send the southpaw on his way.

Crawley was squared up by Scott Boland’s outswinger, edging behind to leave England in a spot of bother at 27 for 2. Ollie Pope and Joe Root too were probed by the moving ball. Neither could get off the mark but managed to preserve their wicket till another spell of rain ended play on the third day.
