Shubman Gill pummels extraordinary century in must-win game

Carnage unfolded at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as Shubman Gill notched up the triple-figure mark yet again, scoring his third century in the 2023 season in the Qualifier 2 match against Mumbai Indians. With the latest hundred, Gill joined Virat Kohli in an elite IPL club while gaining the ascendancy in the race to the Orange Cap.

Gill became the second Indian cricketer to score three or more centuries in a single season after Kohli’s mind-boggling 2016 campaign where he racked up four tons. Overall, he is the third batter on the list with Jos Buttler having bludgeoned four hundreds in the 2022 season.

Gill also became the second Indian to aggregate 800 or more runs in a single season after Kohli’s eye-popping tally of 973 runs in 2016. Overall, he ranks third, with Buttler – 863 runs in 2016 – taking the second spot. There is a good chance Gill might usurp the Englishman if Gujarat Titans play the final this year as well.
