Jimmy Anderson’s dismissal of Virat Kohli for a golden duck was a monumental statement in a battle between two greats that has waged since 2014. Having dismissed Pujara the ball previous, it was clear what the wicket meant to the Lancashire paceman.
But the delivery was also hugely significant as it drew Anderson level with the great Anil Kumble on 619 Test wickets. That puts him in joint-third on the list of all-time leading wicket-takers, behind the greats Muttiah Muralidaran and Shane Warne.
It is another immense achievement for England’s best ever, whose 619 scalps have come in 163 games at an average of 26.61. This spell that took apart India’s engine room in successive balls was right up there in the many moments of pure theatre that Anderson has produced over the years.
