Eight overs into the second session, Ben Stokes hit Scott Kuggeleijn for a six over fine leg to move to 108 sixes Tests – the most by a batter. He surpassed head coach Brendon McCullum, who applauded raucously once Stokes reached the milestone. Just as the partnership with Foakes went past 50 runs, Michael Bracwell struck to get Stokes stumped for a 33-ball 31.
Much to New Zealand’s chagrin, Ollie Robinson lent Foakes company while the keeper-bat notched up his fourth Test fifty to stretch England’s lead.
