Alex Carey’s maiden Test hundred floors the Proteas

Alex Carey scored his maiden Test match century as Australia declared with a massive 386-run first-innings lead on Day 3 of the Boxing Day Test. South Africa then lost captain Dean Elgar for a duck in the seven overs of play possible before the heavens opened up at the MCG.

Keeper-bat Carey was neat with his driving and a hat-trick of fours off Lungi Ngidi gave him a 66-ball fifty. By Lunch, Australia had added 93 runs in the session and their lead neared 300. Eventually, it was a firm push through extra cover for three that took Carey to his maiden Test century and made him only the second Australian stumper to score a Boxing Day Test hundred after Rod Marsh.
