Shikhar Dhawan plays a captain’s knock in Auckland opener

A sensational cameo towards the fag end of the innings from Washington Sundar helped India breach the 300-run mark in the first ODI against New Zealand in Auckland. Washington’s unbeaten 16-ball 37, twinned with sparkling fifties from Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan guided India to 306/7 in conditions that appeared conducive to batting as the innings progressed. Dhawan started upping the ante in the 19th over with a couple of boundaries to go past Gill’s score and then brought up a much-needed half-century.
