In response to Sri Lanka’s 141/8, England made an excellent start in the chase, courtesy a 75-run opening stand by Alex Hales and Jos Buttler, in only 7.2 overs. However, alike England, even the Sri Lankan bowlers turned the screws with a flurry of wickets. Wanindu Hasaranga kick-started the slide by removing the openers, while Dhananjaya de Silva and Lahiru Kumara also chipped in with a brace each. However, Ben Stokes’s composed innings piloted England to a 4-wicket win that secured their spot in the semi-final.
