Phil Simmons blames poor batting show for early exit

West Indies head coach Phil Simmons lamented the fact that the batting unit misfired as the two-time champions were elbowed out of the T20 World Cup by Ireland on Thursday in Hobart. West Indies opted to bat first in a must-win encounter in the hope of putting scoreboard pressure on Ireland, but were clamped down and could only manage an underwhelming 146/5 in 20 overs, despite getting 34 runs in the last three overs.

The humiliation of being the only two-time World Cup winners in the shortest format and yet not making the cut for the Super 12s this time around was not lost on Simmons, as he stated the team hasn’t been consistent with the bat even before the marquee event.
