A six-wicket haul from Jack White helped Northamptonshire restrict Essex to 110 in the second innings. But Simon Harmer returned the favour by picking up six himself to end Northamptonshire’s innings at 163 in a chase of 211. Resuming at a delicate scoreline of 63/5, Essex could only add 47 to their overnight total. Emilio Gay fell early but Ricardo Vasconcelos and Will Young strung useful 30s to lift Northamptonshire. However, once their association was cut short, they lost wickets at regular intervals.
