Maxwell rolled his arm over to great effect in the first ODI versus New Zealand, picking up four valuable wickets for Australia. In the slog overs, Mitchell Santner and Jimmy Neesham tried to up the ante but Jos Hazlewood bagged three wickets in his last two overs to ensure Australia stay in control of the proceedings. Maxwell and Hazlewood combined to pick up seven wickets between them for the cost of only 83 runs in 20 overs.
Australia stuttered upfront in the 233-run chase as skipper Aaron Finch returned to the shed cheaply. His wicket triggered an alarming top-order.
