Stuart Broad, like he does more often than not, counter-attacked on the other side of the drinks break, adding a brisk 55 with skipper Ben Stokes for the seventh wicket but once he was outfoxed by a slower delivery from Kagiso Rabada, South Africa wrapped up the innings rather quickly. Rabada’s dismissal of Stokes, who holed out trying to clear the fence on the legside, was sandwiched between the wickets of Matthew Potts and James Anderson. That Broad was the joint top-scorer in England’s 149 all out inside 38 overs tells you in no small measure about the Proteas’ potency.
