Finally, New Zealand see the back of nemesis Joe Root who departs after playing a marathon knock of 176 off 211 deliveries. Trent Boult bowled one slightly slower and Root was early into the shot, handing Tim Southee a catch at cover. England are 516/6. 12 runs came from the opening over as Foakes struck a couple of boundaries off Tim Southee driving through the off side and then took a three. He got his third boundary of the day by flicking a Boult delivery to square leg while Root reverse-scooped a Southee delivery for a six in outrageous fashion.
