Joe Root didn’t take long to get going in the first innings of the Nottingham Test as he scored at a fair clip and didn’t allow the New Zealand bowlers to settle. He struck a majestic straight drive off a full ball, pulled one with authority and also guided a good-length ball past the slips for three boundaries off speedster Matt Henry in different overs. He also played a fluent drive through cover off a full delivery from Trent Boult. Meanwhile, Ollie Pope is looking in sublime touch at the other end, having gone past 70 to lay a solid platform for England in response to the Kiwi’s 553.
