Daryl Mitchell has won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award for 2021, the sport’s governing body announced on Wednesday. Mitchell refused a single at a crucial juncture of the run chase against England in the T20 World Cup semifinal last year in November.
New Zealand required 34 to win off 18 deliveries when the incident occurred. Adil Rashid tried to stop the ball on his follow-through after James Neesham had bunted the ball slightly wide of the leggie. However, with Rashid colliding with non-striker Mitchell, the Kiwi refused to take a single as he felt he had impeded the bowler’s run-saving effort and eventually sent back Neesham.
A gesture that won the hearts of millions 🙌
