Virat Kohli has stepped down as the Test captain of India with immediate effect. Kohli’s decision comes a day after India fell short in their endeavour to clinch their maiden series win in South Africa. Despite winning the opening Test, below-par batting performances from thereon meant India conceded the series 2-1.

Kohli conveyed his decision via social media, after having recently stepped down as India’s T20I skipper and subsequently being removed as the ODI captain ahead of the South Africa tour. India won 40 out of the 68 Tests with Kohli at the helm, making him the most successful Test captain in Indian history and the fourth overall.
