Australia snared three wickets in the morning session on the fifth day and the hosts would take it with both hands. Haseeb Hameed got a life early on, but he couldn’t make it count and fell to the on-song Scott Boland two overs later. Dawid Malan looked conservative in his approach and it clearly played into the hands of Australia as they strung a set of dots before forcing an error in judgement against Nathan Lyon. Ben Stokes got a reprieve right at the stroke of lunch, and skipper Root, too, had his fair share of luck. The silver lining for England was Crawley’s brisk 77 in what was otherwise a session that belonged to the home team.
