Heather Knight played a captain’s knock in the ODI series opener against New Zealand to put England in pole position after the hosts lost their first wicket at 44. Her momentum-injecting 89 was laden with eight boundaries as she scored at a strike rate of 83.18. Although England’s lower middle-order didn’t add much value to the cause, Knight’s contribution meant the foundation had already been laid for a par total. Katherine Brunt then dug in to stage a late spark worth 43 before she was bowled by Jess Kerr.
