County Championship reported to be returning to familiar format

According to reports in The Times, The County Championship is due to return to its former system of two divisions connected by promotion and relegation next season. The majority of counties are allegedly against the prospect of another campaign played within the conference structure used this year.

That was employed as a response to the situation surrounding COVID-19, and included an initial stage of three groups of six teams, each playing ten matches. The most successful moved on to Division One, playing a further five games to decide the Championship winners. Two subsequent divisions were described by some as containing too many dead-rubbers.

As well as the nature of the County Championship, it is still to be decided when the competition will be played. A proposal will be put forward by the Professional Game Group over playing first class cricket alongside the Hundred, which the ECB has allotted a specific time period to in July and August.
