Joe Root was once again looking to rescue England from humilliation on day five at the Oval on Monday afternoon. He was batting seemingly on a different pitch to his colleagues, blending some steadfast defence with a willingness to put the bad balls away. However, as India opted not to take the new ball in the 81st over, Root chopped on to what seemed an innocuous loosener from Shardul Thakur, the ball reversing ever so slightly but short and wide outside off stump. As Root trudged off, England were staring down the barrel after yet another catastrophic collapse.
