Ravindra Jadeja came in at number five for India on day one at the Oval, suprising many given his usual berth at number seven. Some suggested it was to provide a left-hand, right-hand combination with Virat Kohli, or that he had come in to protect the under-fire Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant. The experiment did not pay off, however, with Chris Woakes dismissing Jadeja for 10. The previous over of Woakes had seen Virat Kohli dropped in the slip cordon, so this was a slight but unfulfilling consolation for the returning โWizardโ.
